Research shows that meat is not a healthy source of protein. It is much better to get the necessary protein from plants. In general, plant-based diets tend to be healthier. A recent study found that people who ate the most intense diet of fruits and vegetables were 31 percent less likely to die of cardiovascular disease and about 20 percent less likely to die overall than those who ate animals.
Studies show that for long-term health, eat less animal meat, especially red meat. You don't need to like tofu (tofu isn't the best vegetable protein), as long as you try to get more protein from the soil and eat fewer animals.
Here are some deeper reasons:
Plant proteins contain more nutrients and fiber (although not all amino acids)
Animal meat is known for its many nutrients. If you eat all kinds of animal meat (light and dark colors, not just beef), you can get all the amino acids you need to produce your own body protein, as well as vitamin B12, niacin, thiamine, B5, B6, B7 and vitamins A and K.
But here's the thing: if you replace all animal proteins, such as nuts, seeds and legumes, with an equally varied diet of plant proteins, you won't be worse off. This is because these foods are also rich in similar nutrients. The biggest difference is vitamin B12, which most plants cannot produce on their own. You can get B12 from eating seaweed and fortified cereals, but the easiest way is to supplement or consume animal products.
Andrea Giancoli, a california-based dietitian, says plant proteins are healthier than meat proteins because they have the same amount of vitamins. That's because, pound for pound, they convert more nutrients into fewer calories. They also contain a complete lack of animal protein: fiber. Don't forget fiber. Fiber AIDS digestion and promotes a healthy gut microbiome, which has been linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
